A few weeks ago, I was scrolling through TikTok when a video from @uhslibrarian stopped my doom scrolling. Her students were using Dungeon & Dragons dice to decide their next book. Brilliant! Simple. Fun. The perfect blend of chance and choice.
So, naturally, I had to bring it to the NGC Library—but with a spooky October twist. 🕸️
👻 Enter: The Skull of Destiny
I reimagined the idea as a Halloween-themed adventure called “Roll for Your Next Read: The Skull of Destiny.” Students dare to drop their dice into a grinning skull (because who doesn’t love a bit of theatrics?) and let fate decide their literary quest.
Here’s how it works:

Awaken the Skull of Destiny – drop the die into the skull and summon your reading fate.

Consult the Genre Glyphs (d8) – roll to discover your genre: fantasy, mystery, horror, dystopian, and more.

Read the Cover Omens (d12) – roll again to find the color of your next book’s cover.

Decode the Author Sigils (d20) – your final roll reveals the first letter of your author’s last name.
Then the hunt begins! Students scour the shelves, combining the clues their dice have delivered to unearth their next great read.

This activity has quickly become one of the library’s most talked-about displays. It transforms indecision into excitement, replaces “I don’t know what to read” with “Can I roll again?” and introduces students to genres and authors they might never have picked otherwise.
